St Lawrence Drive Bridge Refurbishment, Broxbourne

We collaborated with Browne on this project to refurbish this bridge over the New River. The bridge was in a bad state of repair and had sections closed off and it had become unsafe to remain open to the general public.

We erected a temporary scaffold bridge for pedestrians and then commenced the removal of years of general safety and improvement works which had covered up the original Victorian structure. We installed a scaffold deck underneath the bridge and removed all the old timber deck and parapet edges to leave the original bow string arch structure.

We shot blasted the steel and re-painted it. The brick abutments were adjusted to receive a new steel bridge deck. The concept was to use the abutments to take the load but make it look like the bow string arches were being used. By taking the bridge load off the arches it was felt that they would be preserved for many more years.

The end result was warmly received by the local council, Thames Water and local residents.
